2 wb engines that refuse to play each other

I came across 2 engines that refuse to play each other in winboard. Each engine plays dozens of other engines in winboard without any problem. But play them against each other, and winboard abruptly exits. The engines are sos 11.99 and gothmog 0.4.7.
With sos 11.99 the winboard settings include /firstProtocolVersion=1 for white, and /secondProtocolVersion=1 for black.
I'm curious to know if anyone else has this problem. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Probably you don't have the same version of the cgwin1.dll in SOS folder and in Gothmog folder.

It's not the first time I've seen somebody asking this question. I should
probably write some lines about the problem and its solution in my readme
file ...

Why isn't cygwin1.dll downward compatible like just about all other software? Who writes cygwin1.dll?
