I would like introduce the newest (2.0) version of my chess engine called Merlin. This is a beta version only, there may be some bugs in it, so please be patient... :-)

Thanks for the new version.
I had a little trouble installing the book (small). I eventually put the book command from autoexec.cfg into default.cfg, and then I got the book to load.
It also seems that everytime Merlin is white, it opens with d3. Is that always the case?

No. For me it always opens with 1. b4. :)

It is strange, because I have never had problem with specifying the opening book in autoexec.cfg. :-o Does the program print any error message? Have you got the debug.log file?
No, but there is a small 'bug' in book code, Merlin does not randomizes its choice of the book. Merlin maintains a somewhat simple statistics about each played variation, and consequently plays the move that he thinks is the best in each particular position.
So, Merlin will play this first move until he loses games beginning with this move enough times. :-) Then he will try another first move...
I would like to put the book random feature in the final 2.0 version. :-)

Not getting the book to load was my fault.
I did not remove the "#" in autoexec.cfg. But why do you need autoexec.cfg when you can also put the book loading command in default.cfg?

Hi,
The cfg files are both interpreted as console command scripts. Default.cfg is processed before initialization of the engine, the autoexec.cfg is processed after when the engine has booted up already. Some parameters, such like the size of the hash tables are better to be set before startup, while opening of a book file is a task that would be complete after all other initialization.
It is important when I test the engine.
