Some precisions:
---
PolyGlot is a very experimental UCI adapter for WinBoard.
UCI2WB is a similar adapter.
Here is how you should be using PolyGlot:
1) create an INI file for your favourite UCI engine
2) just copy the contents from FRUIT.INI and adapt it to your needs
3) launch Winboard with PolyGlot as an xboard engine
4) the command line needs to be "polyglot ", also polyglot needs to be launched in its own directory
Let me rephrase, because the procedure might be confusing.
PolyGlot will claim to be an xboard engine to WinBoard.
PolyGlot needs to be told an INI file name on the command line ("polyglot ").
PolyGlot will look for this file in the current directory.
The INI file contains vital information about how to launch the UCI engine.
---
Good luck!

Hi Fabien,
I like to test it and you may send it to me.
Currently I'm very busy (playing without success in the strong chess events) but if you can wait a few days I will report the test results.
regards,

Actually a loss on time is not a very good sign that everything is working OK :)
It could be due to a slow down at startup though.

My report on the first game using Polyglot.
Why two instances of Polyglot are running?
The second instance do nothing at all.
On opponent time Polyglot practially doesn't use CPU (0.4 per cent).
While UCI engine is on move it uses about 1 through 10 per cent (floating) of CPU (communication?).
Polyglot allocates about 2 Mb of RAM and uses 1 Mb of it. But with two
instances it looks as 4 and 2 Mb.

One of them is PolyGlot and the other one is actually the engine.
Yes speed is not optimised yet and apparently Dann compiled it in debug mode as well.
Thanks for letting me know.
Can you confirm these numbers on long searches (several minutes)?
You have to understand that PolyGlot is actually a Unix program.
It works perfectly fine on Linux; CYGWIN.DLL does things I am not aware of, and can't control.
However accurate numbers would be useful; does the engine get all the rest of the CPU time?

When Fruit is on move:

PolyGlot always 0.1 per cent of CPU (ie do nothing)
Fruit 89-99 per cent of CPU
Which is which?

This problem is not due to PolyGlot.
It's a CYGWIN.DLL internal feature apparently; nothing we can do about it.
1% to 10% is a lot; please try with engines that might be less "UCI verbose".

I have removed most of the colors.
Reasons:
- There were to much colors. I don't like that.
- The green color didn't make any sense anymore, because only registered users can write.
- The blue color was misleading because it was not possible to distinguish the name from the color of the unvisited link.
I'm sure the forum will look better if all names are displayed in black.
Question to MSIE users: do you see a little knight in the address bar?

OK, so it seems to work at least a little.
1)
You can put any UCI option you like in the [engine] section.
I just put hash and TB options as examples.
2)
DO NOT USE PONDER, it does not work.
This is due to an incompatibility between the xboard and UCI protocols.
This issue will not be solved in the near future.
I know it might looks like it works but it does not, OK?
3)
It's slow
That's OK for now. I/O between the engine and PolyGlot will be sped-up this week-end. Hopefully the speed will be acceptable next week.
Also using a log file is very slow at the moment and will be sped-up even more :)
4)
There are many other limitations, and some engines might not start properly.
I am going to change the engine-initialisation code as well.
Any other problem, I would like to hear about it.
Fabien.

Any other problem, I would like to hear about it.
Fabien.
SOS 3 and 4 both don't play under your adapter!
While List 512 plays fine.

Do you have a log file with SOS.
I mean a PolyGlot log file, when running with SOS.

Volker
It works in the Opera browser but I do not see it when using IE in windows XP.

Fabien.
The last lines of the log file is as follows:
< ENGINE bestmove d7d5
file "xboard.cpp", line 689, assertion "BestMove!=MoveNone" failed
