In the German CSS-Forum, some testers had performed matches using the very old Comet A.97 and very recent versions. Some of the posted results seemed to indicate that the "stone-age" version may well be the strongest Comet.
This had been reason enough for me to have a closer look.
This is the result of my match OLD-NEW:
1 Comet B67 57.5/96 +72 ELO
2 Comet A97 38.5/96 -72 ELO
time-control: 15 Min + 4 Sec
Hardware: K7-2000 1GB RAM, K7-1800 256 MB RAM
These had been engine - engines matches under Fritz-6, no Ponder, both engines always using the same book. Books of Rebel-Decade, Junior5 and the Hongkong-book (CB) had been used.
Table-Bases had been (parially) available on both systems.
My conclusion is, that version B.67 is indeed improved over the (5 years old) version A.97. The improvement is rather modest, but above statistical noise.
