tbpath c:\testa\tb
is there an = sign missing.
my path is correct.
can i test gothmog to check that it is seeing the path?

No, there shouldn't be an '=' sign anywhere. But perhaps you need an
additional backslash at the end, like this:
tbpath c:\testa\tb\
I am not sure about this, because I have no Windows computer to try it on,
but at least it is worth a try.
Do you have the full 5-piece tablebases installed? If you have only
the 4-piece tablebases, it is of course not strange that Gothmog failed
to win the KQKRP endgame.
The easiest thing to do is probably to set up a won tablebase position
and let Gothmog analyze it. If it announces mate instantly, everything
is OK.

I think it's all ok with your setup Mike, as you play with all
tablebases up to 4 men, when Tord mentioned a 5 men endgame.
In fact Tords 'without' was a bit missleading
