Hello Gunther,
This has an exponential feel to it. Depending on the power of the exponent,
it may not be long before we have a Winboard engine for every man, woman
and child on the planet!
cheers,

It doesn't seem to be an exponential, it seems like we have already passed the maximum growth stage.
Look at the derivative...

Number Derivative
1995/2 2
1996/1 2 0
1996/2 3 1
1997/1 5 2
1997/2 6 1
1998/1 9 3
1998/2 21 12
1999/1 30 9
1999/2 38 8
2000/1 57 19
2000/2 75 18
2001/1 97 22
2001/2 114 17
2002/1 148 34
2002/2 174 26
2003/1 201 27
2003/2 223 22

I believe you are right Claudio, but Tom said 'exponential feel' though ;)
It seems impossible to hold that fast pace of the max 2002/1.
BTW in the first month of 2004 we only had two new free releases so far.
Will this be the beginning of a real decrease in growth or just the tension
before CCT6 is finished?
I am interested in guesses about the number of releases in the first two
weeks after CCT6. My guess is that we will see at least 5 new released
ones in that period.
Best regards,
Günther
P.S. Is there by any chance a new version of Esc planned
in the 'next' time or did you also start a new project,
like some others in the last months?
'Old' Esc 1.16 still holds its own in Class B of RWBC anyway :)

Leo spent an entire season to reorganize the WBEC because there were so many new engines... he will be happy with only a few new engines for Season 8. :)
I don't think so, often it happened in the past that many engines were released almost together, leaving other periods "empty"... :)
For sure I know that in G6 group there are many programmers who are working on their new engines.
I think there will be many new releases of already freeware engines, let's hope in someone new too.
Yes it holds, but if you just doubled the time control, it would lose many points, because I designed it on a P200 machine and then is suffers slow games and nowadays hardware.
Esc 2.3 scores 80-85% against Esc 1.16 at long time controls and nowadays hardware, but there are two main reasons I'm not releasing the new version for now:
- I'd like to introduce many new features and I don't find the time to do it;
- I'm considering the idea to split the project in one commercial program and a weaker (but still stronger than 1.16) open source free engine.
Best regards,
Claudio
