New event, Pyramid ladder

Hi all :-),
I am announcing an event with longer time controls. The idea is taken and modified from the Correspondence Chess Organisation IECC, where I participated in the Pyramid Ladder for several years.
I recommend this fine site to anyone interested in email chess.
http://www.iecc-chess.org/
My own rules you find here:
http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/conditions.htm
In the Pyramid each engine plays up to two games in a cycle, one as a challenger and one as a defender.
Challenged can be any other engine that is not more than ten places above in the ladder I set up from my current rating list (see http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/ or below in this posting) , for example an engine ranked 41 can challenge those ranked 40, 39, 38 etc. up to 31. The challenger plays with white pieces and has to win in order to swap places with the defender. In case of a draw or win of the defender the Pyramid ladder remains unchanged.
The Pyramid changes frequently and an engine can gain more than ten ranks in one cycle. For example: Cerebro ranked 59 challenges DanChess on 49 and wins. In the same cycle Dan Chess challenges Leila ranked 39 and also is successful. New standings after the cycle will be 39.Cerebro, 49.DanChess, 59.Leila.
Engines that are not in the ladder so far, for example Drunken Master, Sharper, Alarm, Gullydeckel, Rinko, Deuterium etc. can anyway issue a challenge to those ranked 91-100 and possibly replace them by winning. Hope I did not forget anyone belonging to the Top 100, otherwise this will be corrected.
I will frequently update the list before each cycle starts, so that everyone can see, who is already challenging or defending.
Examples: Comet D38
Gothmog C31
This means Comet has been challenged by Gothmog ranked 38 and not issued a challenge so far. Gothmog has challenged Comet ranked 31, but is still available to be challenged according to the rules above.
Time controls and other conditions:
The match for the top seat is on tournament time control 40moves in 2hours.
It will be commented and probably there will be live coverage.
Games involving an engine ranked 1-50 are 40 moves in 20 minutes.
Others 40 moves in 10 minutes.
Hardware:
Athlon 2600+
128 MB Hash (for final 256 MB)
Fritz GUI
Nunn position (randomly chosen by drawing playing cards 1-20)
4 and 5 men EGTB
Ponder=false
I hope that I will be able perform one cycle each week. Testers who want to participate and add some more CPU time for matches, please contact me via email. You are of course free to use Winboard or Arena instead. Time control will be adapted in case of considerably slower or faster hardware.
All results will be posted regularly in Winboard Forum. The Pyramid ladder is updated after each cycle and then new challenges can be issued for the next cycle.
Please send all challenges to my email address: jaque64@aol.com Do not post challenges in Winboard Forum, as this would probably cause confusion or chaos. I will post a list of matches as soon as a certain number of challenges is issued. Authors may decide to participate with their strongest version, public or beta. Please give at least one opponent as alternative. Might happen that the preferred one has already got a challenge in the meantime.
First cycle starts as soon as there are enough matches, but not earlier than Saturday (February 14th).
Best Regards
Heinz

I am surprised to see the baron so high in your rating list.
I do not complain about movei's ranking and I do not think that it is better than Quark at long time control but I thought that the baron is weaker than
engines like king of kings(based on Leo's tournament) or even gothmog based on NunnC tournament.
Did the baron did significant improvement after the tournament that Movei won or maybe the baron is relatively stronger at longer time control based on your tests?

Hello Uri,
I supposed that this might confuse you a bit :-).
The list is set up from my old overall blitz rating list, regarding the best versions, where I have already enough games and there is indeed one Baron version, The Baron 1.0.2, that is slightly better ranked than best Movei and Gothmog. Of course you can correct this by challenging The Baron :-).
The pyramid ladder will correct very soon all what refers to longer time controls or weird positions like for example Thinker, where I have only few games so far. Good luck is also needed.
First challenges are already made, I hope I can count on an interesting match for Movei.
Btw., I forgot Gandalf 4.32. Gandalf can also be challenged, for all including rank 18, as Gandalf is on 8.
Best Regards

The version of Baron which played the Nunn tournament was clearly very buggy, and
I am sure Heinz' rating for version 1.0.2 gives a better picture of its true
strength. The Baron is very much (at least 100 points, I guess) stronger than
the latest version of Gothmog.

Hi all :-),
I confirm first challenges. Hope there will be more soon. Will need at least fourty matches.
Gothmog 0.46a (39) vs. PostModernist 1008 (30)
Greko 2.68 (78) vs. Madeleine 0.2 (71)
Bestia 0.90 (88) vs. Greko 2.68 (78)
So PostModernist, Madeleine and Greko can´t be challenged anymore for this cycle, but Gothmog, Greko and Bestia still are available as defenders.
I also encourage those who are near the Top 100 to have a try against positions 91-100. As there are: Plywood, KKF Chess, Small Potato, Boot, EnginMax, Neurosis and many more.
"Dead" engines will soon be out, giving those a chance, who are under development like Eeyore, SEE, Aice, etc..
Games will be all available for download.
so here is a corrected list, as I left out Gandalf and had Dorky twice.
Best Regards

Paderborn engines and first challenges

Hi all :-),
I hope that all understood that this is a fun tournament, as with only one game all is possible. There will be crazy standings. Anyway we will have nice games and the best ones will be annotated.
So far we have only a few challenges..
Gothmog 0.46a (39) vs. PostModernist 1008 (30)
Greko 2.68 (78) vs. Madeleine 0.2 (71)
Bestia 0.90 (88) vs. Greko 2.68 (78)
Ufim 4.04 (67) vs. Chispa 4.035 (58)
Amateur 0.78 (44) vs. Francesca 0.09 (36)
Cerebro 1.23 (60) vs. Dan Chess (50)
I forgot of course that Paderborn begins today and that those guys will not have the time to read here and all others who would normally been interested watching the games there. So for those who are already participating in my tournaments and I am sure that they would also like to be added to the tournament I set up the following challenges.
Comet (32) vs. Tao (22)
The Baron (29) vs. Wild Cat (19)
Quark (34) vs. Lamb Chop (24)
Black Bishop (74) vs. Tytan (64)
An additional rule is needed to avoid that all those interesting, strong engines, that do not participate for what reasons whatever or because of not being aware of the pyramid will be kicked out and to make it not so easy for the others. So I thought every engine that ascended twice without having to defend, will get one opponent I pick (usually a strong one)from the ten ranks below of this engine. It may anyway "survive" as a draw is sufficient for the defender. You can give alternative proposals of course, best via email to make this thread not too long. I only think it would be ridiculous for example to have a "wall" of stronger engines between ranks 30 and 50, that is almost impossible to overcome by the following. Another possibility would be to set up the pyramid anew from time to time and placing all engines correspondent the ratings they got so far in the pyramid.
I think as this is only for fun we can experiment a bit.
Best Regards
Heinz
