Deep Sjeng (UCI)

Postby Olivier Deville » 19 Feb 2004, 15:47

When using Deep Sjeng 1.6 in UCI mode (Fritz GUI), I see through TaskManager that it is allocating only 13Mb, when it should take 64Mb. I didn't bother to create a sjeng.rc file, as it is not used in UCI mode.
Any tips ?

These 13 MB = (1 MB Hash + other things like TB Cache, static data, etc.)
I have discussed this issue X times in Y fora.
Some people solve the problem by attacking me for wrongly claiming
that a problem exists, when they don't want to look closely enough to see it.
You will encounter it with EVERY UCI ENGINE in ChessBase GUI since Fritz 7.
Not every single game is thus raped.
BigLion now "solves" the problem by using the Hash size defined in ini file,
if asked to use only 1 MB Hash in UCI mode.

Hi Matthias ! You are right, that 1Mb bug does exist, and still CB team don't seem to care . However, I feel this is not the case here. Kurt may be right : TM doesn't see the correct allocation for Deep Sjeng. It is the same for some other engines (Gothmog for example).

The Bug/Trick shows up in UCI protocol communication !!!
It is definitely not a display problem.
I am tired of calling it a mere bug since Fritz 7.
I bet Fritz 9 (+Junior+Hiarcs+...) will still have it.

No problem. The question is fine here. Only one sugestion: use the letters "OT" in front of the subject.
And yes, that bug exists in Fritz.

No problem here. simply press F3 ( engine option ) and try to change the hash size.

Hi Matthias,
Could you describe this bug for some of us that aren't familiar with it. I'm taking a break from the pressure of trying to get my engine to play better and have started working on a UCI interface so I'm a little curious about it.

Hi Matthias,

When the engine is running in UCI mode, the GUI tells the engine how big
hash tables it should use. The user sets the hash table size in some kind
of dialog box, and the GUI is supposed to communicate all changes back to
the engine.
In the Fritz GUI, this does not always work as intended. Occasionally the
engine is told to use only 1 MB, even though the user has asked for a much
bigger size. This doesn't happen in all games. In fact, it is difficult to
see any pattern at all in when it happens.
In Gothmog 0.4.6 (still unreleased) I have solved this problem by adding a
"fritz-hash" setting in my init file. When the engine is running in UCI mode
and is told to only use 1 MB, the engine ignores the request and uses the value
of the fritz-hash setting instead.

Hi Matthias
Are you sure that we are talking about the same matter.
I remember having tested Deep Sjeng 1.5 in UCI mode under
Fritz8-GUI with the following results: some (Windows) utilities
like TaskInfo do not "understand" the type of memory Sjeng uses
and therefore can't see it. But lowering/increasing values for
hashtables under Fritz8-GUI lead to the desired hash size as
I could test with Sysmonitor under Win98SE. A similar problem
shows Rebel 12 UCI under Fritz-GUI which always gives a value
of 1 MB hash despite of what has been set in the Wb2Uci.eng
file. But this time TaskInfo shows the correct values.

The only UCI enngine I am still using is BigLion.
The new Gothmog will be my Nr. 2, even if I will need a time control ratio
of 20 : 1 to use it as sparring partner for my engine.

Hi Kurt,
we may indeed be talking about 2 different issues with some confusing similarities.
