First note about chess in Arab language was found in 720. in poems of Kutaiyira Azzata and al-Farazdaq. The Arab name for Persian Chatrang is Shatranj. Pieces names were:
Shah - King
Firz - Minister (Queen)
Fil - Elephant (Bishop)
Faras - Knight
Rukh - War Chariot (Rook)
Baidaq - Soldier (pawn)

But first of all, we know now why we say "check" when we attack opponent´s king - "shah".

The bad side of this knowledge is that now an expression like "the king is in check" sounds stupidly redundant
