Have you ever given more thought to using SVG files, rather than pixmaps? It would make making pieces for xboard a lot easier. Resizing/Generating pieces for every board size is a real pain and definitely not the best route.

The GTK branch uses SVG. Problem is that none of the un-orthodox pieces is currently available as SVG.
