Does anyone need free web hosting?

Hi all,
I am writing this because I remember engine authors looking for free web sites to host their engines and other WinBoarders complaining about the slowness of their sites and still other WinBoarders who complain about sites that are unavailable due to too much downloading.
I have no association with the web site that I am about to tell you about and I will not make any money if you decide to use their services. I'm trying to help and I see this offer as a great opportunity for WinBoarders out their to improve their connectivity. No one needs to have a slow site any more.
I have found a company that is offering free web hosting for three years. I have read the ad and the FAQ several times and I cannot find any hidden costs except for one: if the data traffic generated by visitors to your Website exceeds the free 5 GB in a given month, the additional bandwidth is charged at $0.99 per GB, but I don't think that a typical WinBoard site would ever generate that much traffic. The company says: No banner ads, no pop-ups, no sales calls, no spam. They also say: No credit card, no obligations, no strings attached.
My son plus a friend of mine have decided to take advantage of this offer. They have had no problems. If, by any chance, someone knows a reason NOT to use this service, please let me know.
Best regards,
Ron Murawski

I wouldn't bet on this, Ron.
A zipped book of size of a few MB is not so unusual.
Assume 1000 downloads of this in a month, and here we are.
But may be, 1000 is an overestimate. I don't know.
Perhaps, Leo should know best.
Anyway, thanks for giving this hint.

US/Canada only?

Well, I checked it out a little and the offer is legit, however:
1) It seems to be only for people from the US or Canada.
2) 5G is not as much as you think it is (Normally website hostings
are in the order of hundreds of gigabytes.)
http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~shane/stasj/pi ... v/333.html
However, they only charge 1$/Gigabyte, which is cheap.
3) Not all parts of their service work well.

well, once I had opening books with about 20 MB at my site - and after a release usual 300-500 downloads - which is way more then 5 GB... on the other hand 0.99$ is a good price for a GB bandwith... lucky me I have no traffic limit on my site.
And I still offer for free up to 10 MB to an author who searches some space in the web which is usually reachable... (If I know him good enough he get ftp access... one of the problems of my site is, that I can not create multiple ftp accounts with rights for several directorys... but programmers are fair guys... :)
1&1 is a german company - maybe they have from time to time some problems with uptime, but I think they are above 99% which should be okay for everyone... and 3 years for nothing sounds really like a good deal.

I also offer free space for engine authors who need it. And I have the ability to create FTP accounts, so once set up, I'm completely out of the loop.
So far, Chispa is the only one that I host. I haven't heard from Federico in a while, so I guess he's satisfied. I've offered to others as well, but I suppose some are satisfied with Geocities' popups and the occasional 'site unavailable' due to bandwidth oveage, usually after a new release.

I can't find this in the FAQ. Here's what I found:
Are there any limitations?
The offer expires January 21, 2004. That means only customers signing up prior to this date qualify for the 3 free years. Every customer can use the free offer only once and must not resell the service.
Where is my Website hosted?
Your site will be hosted in our Data Center in New York. In total, we own 2 and operate 4 Data Centers in the USA and Europe. Please see Data Center and Connectivity in the About Us section for all details.
I just rechecked and noticed that the signup page is limited to U.S. + Canada only. I never tried to sign up, so I didn't notice.
I had forgotten about the large opening books. Uli, Thomas and yourself are completely correct. 5 Gb/month transfer is not enough if an engine is popular.
Probably not. I've never used their service. I just thought that this might be a good bargain for some WinBoarders.

Hi Ed,
I am no engine author, but perhaps I need to leave my web space
in a while and don't want to use the lousy new offer from my
provider. If you have interest in hosting RWBC, you could contact
me via e-mail.

Greets, Thomas
20MB book x 500 downloads = 10,000 MB bandwidth = 10GB
10GB - 5GB free = 5GB excess bandwidth
The excess bandwidth cost is $5 US.
A smaller 10MB book with the same 500 downloads would equal the limit.
The Horizon opening book is 1.14 MB (zipped) which means there could be 4,385 downloads without any extra cost. The Horizon opening book format wastes quite a bit of space (it is human readable!) and could be substantially reduced in size.
I don't have any stats about how many people access my site and download. I thought that a typical number might be 200 to 300, but I may be very wrong in this.
I also have no traffic limit.
I had no idea you offered this, Thomas. You are a good guy!
I thought so, too.
Best regards,
Ron

As you say, I'm very satisfied with your service. I recommend it.
I have Chispa's beta releases in a Geocities page, I will move it to the your server probably tomorrow (I need to make a new section in the Chispa's page).

well, so far I host Pepito, Thinker and La Dame Blanche... Once I did also host Averno and LordKing, but those days I was not fully sure if I should give away the FTP-Password or not... but right now I have problems with it- as I said, programmers are fair guys... :)
Greets, Thomas
P.S.: In the beginning I had only 10 MB of my own provider - those days I put the books of Quark on the site of my fathers company... he had only 5 GB traffic... when I saw that it was near to the limit I removed it from there and put the files on another site I operate... that were complicate days... :)
