I wouldn't mind if the photo appeared *inside* the message. Not sure that I want to see them on the index page, as that could make it a pretty big download and a lot to scroll through.

You're absolutely right!
Photo's in the way you have here will just waste space and bandwith.
As Günther pointed out, a gallery would be nice however.

PS: Konnte die Partie gegen Mint gestern leider nicht mehr zu Ende verfolgen. Hatte ein zwei stündiges Telefongespräch mit einer guten Bekannten . Ich denke aber, die Partie war tot Remis, oder hat Mint noch einen Fehler gemacht? Muß BB irgendwann doch mal etwas mehr Endspielwissen beibringen, wie z.B. ungleichfarbige Läufer.

Nachdem auch noch die Bauern auf dem Königsflügel abgetauscht wurden,
konnte ich die Partie guten Gewissens, bei jeweils einem Bauern auf dem
selben Flügel und ungleichfarbigen Läufern, als remis abschätzen.
Das war irgenwann jenseits von Zug 170!

Kein Problem für mich, sowas kommt schon ab und an mal vor in RWBC,
hatte auch schon Partien jenseits 250 Zügen. Jedenfalls muss man
beim Abschätzen wirklich vorsichtig sein, denn manchmal ist es
unglaublich, was die Programme alles treiben, um das sofortige
remis zu vermeiden

Photo's in the way you have here will just waste space and bandwith.

Maybe with small JPGs? For example, this one is 48*48 and has only 2,55 KB:

If photos are used, I'd like to suggest that they should have a standardized quadratic dimension and a maximum file size (i.e. 48*48 3 KB ).
For a WB posters gallery (~20 KB GIF):

I agree. Photos on the start page seem to be a bad idea. Also the formatting is problematic. (For admins of a Parsimony forum: it is an img-tag in the regulars list.)
