Hi Oliver,
Good game! I love the playing style of CSTal. Its not the strongest engine but it sure is fun to watch.
And it certainly highlighted TRACE's very poor king safety heuristics. Which only motivates me (even more)to rewrite that part of her evaluation. She knows practically nothing about king safety - and against the 2300+ engines it really shows. ;-)
I posted a few weeks back that a new version (bug fix) was soon to be released.
Well unfortunately, I got a bit carried away, and have now revamped her eval, and added pawn hash tables. Also qsearch has been cut down - mate/stalemate detection removed as it interacted (badly) with futility pruning - causing the search to return some false positives.
The pawn hashing is now working fine. The pawn/piece evals still need work and tuning. I am storing a lot of info in the pawn hash and now I'm trying to whittle it down a bit. Also, move ordering/sorting is getting a makeover to remove some bottlenecks.
BTW, a long-time problem has been fixed - under Arena she refused to move at startup. Stupid me sent a "feature done=0" before initialisation but forgot to send a "feature done=1" afterwards... ayyay yay yay... sorry guys.
I will (hopefully) send 1.28 to Leo today and then get to work on the stuff mentioned above. Has her strength improved? Probably not, but ask me again in a month or so when 1.30 comes out. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for including TRACE in your tournament!
Best regards,
Ross

Hi Ross
Many thanks for your interest, and for the news about TRACE :)
BTW TRACE was playing this game under Arena, no problem found.

Now that is strange. Maybe I introduced a bug after 1.27 and then fixed it???
I must be getting old and doddery.
Check your email, I have sent you 1.29 ... which includes a couple of patches.
Best regards!

Many thanks Ross :)
The game vs. CSTal was played by hand on my¨PIV 3GHz with the Alt-Tab trick, as I am still waiting for a new nullmodem cable : maybe the bug in Arena appeared only in engine-engine matches.
I rather use Arena for Auto232 games because the damn Fritz GUI has a heavy bug (ponder and GUI book are always on).
