Interesting game, but is the pawn sacrifice 19. e5 really sound? I no
longer understand most of the games my engine play, but in this case
it seems to me that white does not have sufficient compensation, and
that black must have made some mistake later in the game ...

Hi,
Interesting game, but is the pawn sacrifice 19. e5 really sound?
I think so because there is no secure place for the black king anymore and (and because Shredder plays it too )
Of course the position is too complicated (for me) to be absolutely sure but the the sacrifice looks really nice for me!

Alex

At least it is interesting, but I am not entirely convinced. Do other amateur
engines like 19. e5? The position:
r3r1k1/1p3p1p/1qnpbBp1/2p3Q1/p2bP3/2NP1RP1/PPP3BP/1R5K w - - 2 19
The exchange sacrifice in today's game against Abrok looks even more dubious.
Gothmog should probably have lost the game, but was lucky this time.

Yes
Movei has score of 0.09 pawns against white before failing high on e5 at iteration 9 after few seconds of search.
score is 0.61 pawns for white at iteration 9 and
score continues to be positive later:
0.70/10
0.75/11
0.72/12

Hello Tord,

Gothmog 0.4.6 vs. Abrok 5.0

 Gothmog played 9.Bb5?!

This is a very interesting position! Some engines would play 9.e6!? with a great attack but a pawn behind. Gothmog shows after a few seconds the exchange in it's pv:
Gothmog 0.4.6 UCI:
.
.
11+ 00:14 -0,25 Lc4b5 00 Lb5xc6 b7xc6 Sd2b3 Lc8a6 Sb3xd4 La6xf1 Sd4xc6
11- 00:25 0,03 Lc4b5 00 Lb5xc6 b7xc6 Sd2b3 Lc8a6 Sb3xd4 La6xf1 Sd4xc6
I think the exchange isn't too bad, Gothmog gets a bishop and the free pawn for it's rook, black gets a nasty doubled pawn.

Gothmog 0.4.6 vs. Abrok 5.0
r1bq1rk1/p1pn1ppp/2p5/4P3/1b1p4/5N2/PP1N1PPP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 11 a b c d e f g h 8 8 7 7 6 6 5 5 4 4 3 3 2 2 1 1 a b c d e f g h generated with GenDiag 1.8 (C) 2002 by Andreas Herrmann
 Position after 10... bxc6

At this point some engines would play 11. Nc4. I think Gothmogs 11. Nb3 is the better choice here.

After the exchange the position looks quite good, Gothmog has very active play but there is no real winning line:
Gothmog 0.4.6 vs. Abrok 5.0
rn1q1rk1/p1p2ppp/2p5/1b2P1B1/1Q1N4/5N2/PP3PPP/R5K1 b - - 2 15 a b c d e f g h 8 8 7 7 6 6 5 5 4 4 3 3 2 2 1 1 a b c d e f g h generated with GenDiag 1.8 (C) 2002 by Andreas Herrmann
Position after 15. Bg5

At the end Gothmog was really a bit lucky...
But: That's why we all love your engine! I hope you don't teach Gothmog to play more passive in the future :-)

Best,
Alex

An excuse to test my new winboard forum password =)
Slow Chess likes e5 after 3.9 seconds on an Athlon 2700. However it doesn't have an attacking PV, the first few moves of the PV are the same as the game, but then it trades its knight for the rook, and likes being material up.
Paste of the Slow Chess PV:
[FEN "r3r1k1/1p3p1p/1qnpbBp1/2p3Q1/p2bP3/2NP1RP1/PPP3BP/1R5K w - -"]
[SetUp "1"]
1. e4-e5 Bd4xe5
2. Nc3-e4 Be5xf6
3. Ne4xf6+ Kg8-g7
4. Nf6xe8+ Ra8xe8
5. Qg5-f6+ Kg7-g8
6. c2-c4 Nc6-e5
7. Rf3-e3
Also interesting is that null-move fails Slow here, and causes it choose e5 at 9 ply instead of 8 ply.

Same for movei
I even did not look at the game.
I thought that the problem is to find e5 and I did not think that there is a problem with later moves.

I do not understand what you mean.
Did you check that without null move it can find e5 in 8 plies instead of 9 plies?

I am not sure "find" is the right word. After all, I am not at all sure it
is a good move, but the fact that Shredder, SlowChess and Movei all agree
with Gothmog makes me somewhat more confident that the sacrifice is correct.

But: That's why we all love your engine! I hope you don't teach Gothmog to play more passive in the future :-)
Thanks!
I have no plans of making it more passive. The very risky and aggressive
style probably costs a few points, but I still like it and hope to keep it
this way.
Thanks also for the comments to the game, and for running your tournament!
Tournaments at such slow time controls are very rare. I also greatly
appreciate that it is possible to follow the games live.

I think that the pawn sacrifice is indeed the strongest move in the given
situation. It frees square e4 and allows White to bring the knight to e4
which is almost a winning line.

I also greatly appreciate that it is possible to follow the games live.
finally I found someone who watches the live games :-)
Does it work well for you? Since I updated my browser I sometimes have problems with not loaded board graphics and I can't find the problem... Maybe I should look for another applet.
I am sure I am not the only one. :-)
It works perfectly in Mozilla on the Linux box in my office. It does not work at
all (no board appears) in the Safari Web browser on my Macintosh PowerBook.

Hi Tom
I very much like your engine with its very aggressive style.

Thanks, Kurt!
There will probably be a new, less buggy and slightly stronger version tomorrow.
And by the way, my name is not Tom, but Tord. :-) You are not the first person
to make that mistake.

I thought that the problem is to find e5 and I did not think that there is a problem with later moves.
I do not understand what you mean.
Did you check that without null move it can find e5 in 8 plies instead of 9 plies?
I gave Slow's NxR line as more info for Tord. I think because of the option of gaining material e5 must be a good move here. (I have no idea if Gothmog's Nh5+ is better or worse than NxR.)
I once wrote code to find if null-move changed the result of the search, it was similar to retesting with null-move off except it tried to output more info about where null-move failed. (It is a menu option, although I didn't put this option into the released version.) I was planning to use the information to try to search better, and I still think that it could help, but I decided I didn't want to spend the time that was probably needed to add and test more search rules.

Hello Kurt,
Thanks for the analysis.
Do not compliment Tord. You will get him all blushing and stuff....
Later.
