Registring Computer Accounts on Fics

Why registring a computer on fics is so hard.
we in italy have 5 programs:
Raffaela, Larsenvb, Fortress have an account on fics.
Leila and Golem have a request for an account pending.
I submitted the request on may 22 and until now I was not able to understand
what's going on.
the author of leila is in the same situation.
May be they don't want new programs on his server but our programs are not
clones and a registred account would be usefull to improve our program
I'd like to partecipate on computer tournaments on fics, but this seems not
possible.
what's the matter?
Anybody here esperienced the same problem?

Dear Gianluigi,
some friends of mine and me had similar problems indeed when we tried to play a computer tournament at FICS. In short and sharp: answers to our request came (if they came) months later, nobody got an account, two persons (including a very well known tester) was banned from FICS for (unwillingly) playing rated computer games from their human accounts. I was also temporarily banned by the head-admin. The guy with the handle "computer-abuse" unbanned me later.
Maybe to send mail to Adrian Regimbauld (author of Faile) will help. He manages the computer accounts at FICS. But I'm afraid it doesn't.

You might want to try to get a computer account at chess.net http://www.chess.net/ because they seem to have several computer accounts. But I have no idea how much work it is to open a computer account.
That's where I play. I opened an account (not computer) at FIC, but I've only played one game there, that I remember, I only play games at Chessnet, but I've never run a Chessprogram there.

AFAIK computer accounts are limited to ~1700 ELO there :-(

Hi volker,
I have seen programs (new accounts) playing with 2450 ratings, i dont think all accounts are limited but probably "most" are, maybe they have a rule to decide which program play at what strength.
by the way whats your account (human or computer) in chess.net? also pete whats yours? :) maybe we can meet ;)
cheers

I play on FICS as Elderon, and have a computer account called TheExtreme. I have had the account for some time now, but I do remember when I signed up, that they required the computer account to be a unique engine. At the time, I had Extreme Chess and that is what I registered, but since then I have played with several Winboard engines and Fritz as well. They got back to me pretty quickly also, so maybe it is something with the new Admin for the computer accounts. I would try explaining your position to whoever might be the head admin over there and see if you can get anywhere.

I'm PGalati at Chessnet. They seem to list me at 1526 at the moment, but that's just because the last game I played there was a 15 minute game and it was an easy win. At 5 minute Blitz I'm in the 1250 type of range, that's more realistic because I'm not as good as a 1500 player. OTB, I'd probably be rated at under 1000.

By "free" I mean that a user can navigate through the various rooms of the server freely and participate without an admin exercising his judgement on the participants conduct and the direction and relevance of the discussion. There is alot more that I have chosen not to say here in regards to "chessnet" so suffice to say it is the chess server equivalent of communist CHINA.

Freedom of speach and expression is an often used saw to excuse rotten and churlish behavior.
After news:rec.games.chess.computer turned into an insipid cesspool of morons, I was only too glad to find CCC where moderation "reigned in free speach" in order to create civilized discussions.
I have never been to chessnet, and probably won't go there. But moderated forums are great for people who want to avoid ill-mannered brats who have all the civil refinements of a pack of jackals.

For what I use Chessnet for, to play 5, 10, and occasional 15 minute games in the "public" area, I don't notice anything at all being wrong with Chessnet. It certainaly doesn't resemble comunist China to me.
I don't however run a program there, or ever play programs that _are_ there. But the administrators are not the least bit of a problem at the moment.

I haven't been able to register at Chess.net yet, due to a connection error (?). So you could say that gaining access resembles China somewhat.

Not to me it doesn't, but I don't know why they want me to wear this uniform!
Someone's going to complain about a place no matter where it is, maybe to him it resembles China, but who would think there'd be so many Chess players in China.
I didn't have any trouble signing up.

Let me just add that I don't have a problem with the moderation of a message server such as CCC. A live chat is something altogether different, however and needs to be addressed differently of course. Chessnet has said that their interest is in building a "family chess server" - fine. How they have attempted to achieve their purpose is what I disagree with. Don't bother trying to use their public room BTW unless you don't mind waiting 20 or more seconds each time you speak. Now if players are going to use abusive language then of course they can easily be +censored by the offended. There is no NEED for the policing of each user on an active basis. Is this a Day care center for children or a chess server?

Don't underestimate China..They are become a world power in chess..Most still play Chinese Chess, but even if a small % play international chess...They will be a force to be reconked with..
Even now, they have top female players ranked within the top 10, and their top player is ranked 35th in the world and climbing..
(This is from personal experience, their China team in my inter-university tournament is dominatining with a 11.5/12 score right now..)
