Yeah. Lions are protected animals, and killing them is illegal.

Hello Fabien,
fine that you want to participate. Game will be 40 moves in 10 minutes and as soon as you have a match involving a top 50 engine or Fruit is in the top 50 it will be 40 moves in 20 minutes.
Yesterday I played with Fruit 0.98a against Nullmover, Ufim, Cerebro, Djinn and Amateur 2.78 and this version got 10 points out of 16.
So I decided to add Fruit 0.98b together with Amateur 2.80 to the strong Nunn Top tournament where of course it will have to suffer a bit. But it defends decently so far and for a "new" engine it is simply sensational. Results for all with position one in a few hours. Position two probably this evening. Those are only "dully" Blitz games, but on fast hardware and 680 games for each engine, so that we have at least something statistically meaningful when comparing with future versions. On the other hand Blitz games from top amateur engines are already on a level today we could only dream of years ago and often there are very nice games. And another thing: watch the move chosen in Blitz and then run the same position for minutes. What do you think how often this move is identical?
I also like to watch long tournament games, but to have significant results here, you would have to concentrate on a few Elite engines like Shredder, Hiarcs, Junior, Fritz, Ruffian and Chessmaster. It is just boring to discuss all this over and over again. So I think we should let everyone do something useful to add and not discriminate methods other testers are using. I like all the many different tests and visit all sites regularly.
Best Regards
Heinz

Unfortunately some programs have bugs that cuase them to play illegal moves including killing lions.

Hi Matthias :-),
yes, I am just considering to modify the rules so that all lions are able to climb to the pole position without being molested by other envious species. But there seems to be another rule in this wild world: "eat and get eaten".
So I suppose that you have no other choice than improving your king of all (chess) animals that much that any challenge would be ridiculous :-).
Best Regards

Don't worry about versions before 1.0, they will all play exactly the same chess. I am adding UCI features, and want to test those. For chess games in which the result "matters", I recommend you just stick with whatever version (0.98b in your case).
I expect to have a last beta version just before the week-end with search options that can be modified by the user. If it works fine, it will be called 1.0 and released (and I will have a break).
Fabien.
