Winboard doesn't see Crafty.rc as it is still logging games

Hello,
I have Crafty version 1801_smp and the latest Winboard.
my crafty.rc file looks like this:
computer
hash 96M
hashp 12M
cache 4M
drawscore=0
log off
ponder on
book on
book random 3
book width 5
learn 7
resign 7
exit
1. Yet the games are still logged.
2. Crafty/Winboard hesitates on start-up, by displaying "Starting chess engine" for about 5 seconds or so. I have had Crafty on the same machine and never seen this prolonged delay in startup. It was usually instantaneous.
3. Crafty is 'thinking' in the opening book. I suspect that's related to the fact that crafty.rc isn't being 'seen'.
Why isn't crafty.rc file being 'seen'?

Crafty is perhaps searching for the EGTB.
You have not specified a path in your
crafty.rc file.
