I tried out the 2010a version in Arena, and it seemed to work OK for me. Seems quite strong. Very Stockfish-ey looking search (evals always seem to jump in increments of 0.04 pawns, deep searcher).

Without looking closer into it and even when the exe did not run here, a check of the binary reveals that
it directly recompiles so much Stockfish 2.01 sources into it that I can discard further investigation.
I also guess that the 'author' and the person, who introduced this thing via mail are the same persons...

Thanks Tony and Guenther for the comments. As far as I know, Lourenço Oliveira and André Fernandes are two different persons, and both of them are real people.

I will ask the author of Tippy to come here and answer the questions. The status of Tippy (original work or derivative) needs to be determined.

I suggest that you send the exe also to the Stockfish team with a little note :)

Hello everyone! I am the creator of TippyChess.

For clarity, the search function of the latest version of Tippy was inspired by the stockfish.

I am commenting the code to put on the site.

Thanks André for answering.

OpenWar rules say : "Derivative engines are not welcome". Therefore I am not sure if I can accept your registration. I hope more experts will give their opinion, so that a clear decision can be made.

Hello Oliver,

I'm sorry I had not read it, if you can disregard the registration. No problem.

Thanks

Sure André, let's do it this way.

If someday you come with an original engine, you will be very welcome.

Oliver,

The previous version of Tippy's totally original, but the search is very weak. So as I do not know how I could improve performance of search, I was inspired by an engine TOP (mainly part of alpha-beta pruning).

And that was very good! Well apart from getting stronger, I learned a lot!

In the future I hope to have something totally unique, and join your tournament! :)

Thanks

Marco Costalba (Stockfish team) writes :

Code: Select all
Please, I would like to strongly highlight that _any_ derivative work
of SF must be released with sources too.

Stockfish is not free software, it is open-source GPL software, this
is very different. If someone copies code from SF and do not release
the sources together with the exe file then this is a very strong
violation of the GPL license and such engine should be banned
immediately to defend the GPL spirit and the work of people that
believes in this open-source approach.

This means nobody should use Tippy until the author complies with the GPL license.
